9180 From the last half of the 19th century a large thick walled bentwood measure in its original dark green paint. Aside from its size, unique to this piece are the original cast iron grips needed to support the weight of its high volume capacity. A rolled iron band supports the top and iron tacks are used throughout to secure its structure. 9177 From Lancaster County, a wonderful example of an early 1800’s painted rye basket akin to the area’s traditional culture. It is actually a bi color basket appearing to have been painted white overall with robin’s egg blue on the outside. The paint is very dry and has the texture of a primitive white wash. The weave is tight and stiff with typical signs of minor wear less any major breaks or repairs. 9170 From Lancaster PA, an 1800’s large maple dough bowl in its original oxblood red paint. It has a wonderful depth, slightly elliptical shape, rounded smooth rim, and dry surface. The wear and variations in the paint color certainly authenticate its age and years of use. One small crack (one inch) is present near the rim. 9166 A Gage dry measure in early green with the wonderful OATS inscribed in white. It is from Henniker, NH and signed (impressed) as such on the inside bottom. Impressed on the bottom underside are three dates 1888, 1889 and 1900. There were two companies in Henniker who manufactured dry measures initially Gage & Co. and later beginning in 1895 by C.A. 9158 A completely original 19th century softwood firkin staved construction with tapered sides and metal banding, wire bail and a turned hickory handle. The rim on the lid is wrapped, pegged and cleated ending in a tapered end. 9153 From Virginia a mid 1800’s tapered flat bottom splint basket in wonderful tomato red paint. Although the red is early it was the last color painted over the original blue, then pumpkin and then yellow. Lots of crazing in the red reveals fine yellow lines. It has a steamed and notched handle, double wrapped and intact rim and remains very tight and sturdy. Its condition is excellent. What a hot shot of color for any room in need of being energized. 9149 From New England a cobbler’s cubby dating to the late 19th or early 20th century in its original oxblood paint. The five curved cubbies were used to store various size nails to secure heels to shoes. Interesting profile as from the side it resembles the silhouette of a shoe. Mortised dividers, great color and with a gentleman’s signature on the underside indicates its origins may have been with a shoe factory. A great little storage piece in solid condition. The handle, hand shaved and steamed shaped is very tight as is the weave overall. The construction uses no nails or tacks. 9137 Mid 19th century paint decorated bentwood oval pantry box with overlapping sides secured with small copper tacks. The bottom is secured to the sides with wooden pegs. Wonderful but worn dry paint in shades of green, yellow, gray, brown, white, black, red (lips), flesh tone and black which all comprise the composition of a colonial woman gazing into a hand mirror at arm’s length. One tack on the external lap and a tiny splinter from the bottom of the lap are missing. All other aspects are intact making it a pleasing decorative, nicely executed piece.
